WHAT IS ORTHODONTION?

ORTHODONTION (orthos=regular, odontos=tooth)

Orthodontion is a preventive branch of dentistry, by which’s therapy we normalize pathological relations between the teeth, upper and lower jaw, i.e. we achieve static and dynamic balance of the orofacial region.

A discipline in dentistry which studies and supervises dentofacial growth and development, from birth to dental adolescence, including all preventive, interceptive and therapeutic procedures on dental, dentoalveolar, intermaxilar and maxillofacial irregularities. (By WHO)

WHAT ARE ORTHODONTIC ANOMALIES?

Orthodontic anomalies are an aggregate of different disorders in ortofacial region which have occured during the qrowth and development, either it is about a disorder of one tooth,a group of teeth or undevelopment of teeth and bone mass. They also include bite disruption.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT?

The purposes are:

  • Prevention of cavity and periodontal illnesses

  • Optimization of the chewing function

  • Optimization of   the esthetic of the patient

  • Optimization of the phonation of the patient

  • Soothing the possible psychological issues of the patient

  • Preparation of the patient for prosthetic procedures

  • Prevention of temporomandibular joint disorders

  • Prevention of neck and back pain

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO START AN ORTHODONTIC THERAPY?

It is different and it depends on the difficulty of the anomaly. We are trying to start the therapy early, about 6-7 years with the anomaly with a bone issue, which can get worse during the growth and development. Those are, for example, crossed bite (i.e. progeny complex).

WHICH ORTHODONTIC DEVICES ARE THERE?

For therapy of orthodontic irregularities we use orthodontic devices which could be divided into three large groups:

  • Mobile

  • Fixed

  • Combination of mobile and fixed

The devices can also be divided by function:

  • Active mechanic

  • Active functional

  • Passive orthopedic

  • Various combinations
